Frequently Asked Questions | Sunpetal Pediatric Therapy

Have a question that is not answered here? Call us at (317) 207-0824, email intake@sunpetaltherapy.org, or fill out our intake form and we will be happy to help.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based therapy that helps children develop meaningful skills such as communication, social interaction, daily living, and emotional regulation. ABA focuses on understanding each child's individual strengths and needs, then using positive, supportive strategies to help them learn and grow.

ABA therapy is widely recognized as one of the most effective early interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder. At Sunpetal Pediatric Therapy, our ABA programs are child-led, play-based, and individualized — meaning therapy is built around your child, not a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

ABA therapy is most commonly used to support children with autism spectrum disorder and related developmental delays. At Sunpetal, we serve children ages 2–10 across the Indianapolis area.

Every child is different, and services are fully individualized based on their specific goals, learning style, and family priorities. If you are unsure whether ABA therapy is the right fit for your child, book a consultation call — we are happy to talk through your situation with no pressure.

Sessions at Sunpetal are structured yet playful and engaging. Your child may work on communication, social skills, daily routines, or emotional regulation through natural play, child-chosen activities, and guided practice. Therapy is tailored to your child's specific interests to keep learning meaningful and motivating.

Rather than rigid, table-based instruction, we follow the child's lead — embedding teaching into activities they genuinely enjoy. See our center to get a feel for the environment your child would be learning in.

School special education services — like IEPs — focus on educational goals within the school setting. ABA therapy, especially when provided at a center like Sunpetal, targets a broader range of behavioral, communication, and daily living skills. The two work best when used together. Many of our families run both simultaneously. See our post on ABA therapy and school for a full breakdown.

Yes. While research consistently shows that early intervention produces the strongest long-term outcomes, ABA therapy is effective at any age. The approach simply shifts to meet the child where they are developmentally. We serve children up to age 10 at Sunpetal.

In most cases, yes — insurance authorization typically requires a formal autism diagnosis. If you have not yet pursued a diagnosis, visit our Autism Screening page to understand your next steps. We help guide families through the screening and referral process so nothing falls through the cracks.

Research supports starting ABA therapy as early as 18 months to 2 years old, when the brain's neuroplasticity is at its highest. At Sunpetal, we specialize in early intervention ABA therapy for children ages 2–10. The earlier support begins, the more time your child has to build the foundational skills they need to thrive. See our full post on what age to start ABA therapy for more detail.

Getting started is straightforward — our team walks you through every step:

  1. Fill out our intake form or call us at (317) 207-0824
  2. We verify your insurance coverage and answer any questions about benefits
  3. A BCBA completes a comprehensive assessment of your child's strengths and needs
  4. We develop an individualized treatment plan and begin services once authorization is approved

We move efficiently through this process and communicate with you at every stage. If you would like to visit before committing, book a tour or consultation call first.

You are not obligated to stay on a waitlist. If Sunpetal has availability, you can begin the intake process with us while declining or deferring your spot elsewhere. There is no penalty for choosing what is best for your child. Read our full post on ABA therapy waitlists to understand your options.

Absolutely. We welcome families who are transferring from other centers and are experienced at making that transition smooth. We review previous programming when available, prioritize rapport-building, and pick up where the last team left off — so your child does not have to start over. See our post on switching ABA therapy providers for a full walkthrough of what to expect.

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) completes a comprehensive assessment and collaborates closely with you to develop individualized goals. Treatment plans are data-driven, regularly reviewed, and adjusted as your child progresses. You will always know what your child is working on and why — and your input shapes the goals from the start.

Your child will be supported by a consistent team that includes a BCBA and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs). All staff are trained in evidence-based ABA practices and work closely together to provide continuity of care.

Consistency matters deeply at Sunpetal. Our team is intentionally small and our caseloads are kept manageable — so your child builds a genuine relationship with familiar faces, not a rotating group of new therapists. Meet our team to see who would be working with your child.

Extremely involved — and intentionally so. Parent involvement is one of the most important factors in a child's ABA progress. We provide ongoing communication, caregiver coaching, and practical strategies so skills learned in therapy carry over into daily routines at home and in the community.

You will never feel like a bystander in your child's care at Sunpetal. You are a core part of the team.

Yes — many children receive ABA therapy before or after school, or on a blended schedule. The right approach depends on your child's current skills, goals, and readiness. See our detailed post on ABA therapy and school at the same time for scheduling options, school readiness guidance, and how we support smooth transitions.

Yes — we accept most major private insurance plans and Indiana Medicaid. Visit our Insurance & Billing page for the full list of plans we accept. If you are unsure about your coverage, contact us directly and we will verify your benefits before you fill out a single form.

Authorization timelines vary by insurance plan, but our team handles the process on your behalf and works to move things forward as efficiently as possible. We will keep you updated throughout and let you know as soon as services can begin.
